Chesterfield, NJ

Chesterfield, New Jersey is a rural community in northern Burlington County. It offers the unique combination of a pastoral setting and easy access to suburban amenities. This is one of the reasons Chesterfield, NJ was named the #1 “Best Place to Live” in Burlington County, NJ by Philadelphia Magazine in 2006 (an abundance of fresh Jersey tomatoes is probably another reason). The approximately 21 square mile township has a population of nearly 8,000. Chesterfield is the ideal place for those looking for open space, a tight-knit community and quiet living.

The Township

The historic villages of Chesterfield, Crosswicks and Sykesville make up Chesterfield Township. Crosswicks even played a role in the Revolutionary War. The communities include small shops and quaint homes with turn-of-the-century architecture, including Georgian, Victorian and Federal styles, as well as new construction, surrounded by beautiful, sprawling farmlands and wooded areas. More than 7,000 acres of picturesque farmland have been preserved through state, county and township programs and agriculture remains the predominant land use in the township.

An Award-Winning Community

The Chesterfield Township Planning Board adopted an innovative master plan and land development ordinance, which funnels future growth into a New Urbanism, neo-traditional community known as Old York Village. The new village consists of 560 acres and when complete will feature between 1,200 and 1,300 housing units, including detached single-family homes and townhouses, an elementary school, a mixed-use village center containing retail and office facilities, and parks. A significant portion of the community has already been built with new homes currently available.

Old York Village won the American Planning Association’s National Outstanding Planning Award in 2004, the New Jersey Future Smart Growth Award in 2003, the NJ Chapter of the American Planning Association’s Outstanding Planning Implementation Award in 2002 and the New Jersey Planning Officials’ Achievement in Planning Award in 2004, among others. It’s that good.
